The Fiji Sports Council Board is currently navigating a challenging situation following allegations against its Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman, Gilbert Vakalalabure. Peter Mazey, who chairs the Board, stated that the unique structure of the board, where the Chairman also functions as the CEO, contributes to the governance complexities and has led to certain issues arising without proper Board oversight.

In response to the allegations, both Vakalalabure and Operations Manager Litia Senibulu have been placed on leave while an investigation is conducted. This inquiry, being handled by the Australian finance company Pherrus at a cost of under $50,000, is set to explore 16 critical issues over a three-week period. These issues cover a wide range, including financial arrangements with Fiji Airways, the FSC Under 20 team’s trip to New Zealand, and the management of the organization’s sponsored tournaments.

Additionally, the investigation will scrutinize the CEO’s appointments, staff engagement practices, and the use of drivers’ overtime for personal purposes, along with contracts and tender processes. The Board has identified ongoing concerns about mismanagement, unauthorized expenditure, and responses to Board resolutions, as well as potential breaches of policy or law.

While the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) previously cleared Vakalalabure of complaints, the Sports Council Board emphasizes its commitment to thoroughly examining these new allegations despite the closed ruling from FICAC. In doing so, the Board aims to restore confidence and ensure that governance practices within the council meet the highest standards.

This investigation presents an opportunity for the Fiji Sports Council to address governance issues head-on and implement necessary reforms to enhance transparency and accountability within the organization, paving the way for a stronger, more officially compliant future.
