Fiji Police Unleash New K9 Unit to Battle Drug Trafficking

The Fiji Police Force is launching a new K9 unit in Savusavu to enhance efforts against drug trafficking, particularly at the busy port that serves as a major entry point for illicit substances. Assistant Commissioner of Police for Planning and Research, Aporosa Lutunauga, emphasized that busy ports are challenging to monitor due to the high volume of ships and containers, which can obscure inspections.

The establishment of this new unit, along with an additional team in Vitogo, aims to strengthen border security and improve the detection capabilities for illegal drugs. The deployment of specialized sniffer dogs is expected to significantly contribute to early interception of drug trafficking activities.

Lutunauga pointed out that the initiative addresses vulnerabilities across several islands, including Taveuni, Levuka, Lau, and Kadavu. However, he also acknowledged a challenge in expanding their K9 capabilities, noting a lack of local breeders to meet current demands. To counteract this, the Fiji Police are collaborating with the New Zealand Police through a partnership program that provides training for K9 unit personnel.

Currently, the Fiji Police Force operates with six drug detection dogs and over 20 K9 units, which are instrumental in combatting drug-related issues and bolstering nationwide security. Previous reports have shown these units performing well; for example, in recent operations, they have contributed to significant drug seizures and numerous arrests, underscoring the essential role of K9 units in maintaining public safety.

The combination of improved K9 units and heightened border security reflects a proactive stance by the Fiji Police Force, indicating a strong commitment to protecting communities from the dangers of drug trafficking. As law enforcement continues to enhance its operations, there is hope for a safer and drug-free environment in Fiji.
