A Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise was carried out last week by the Joint Task Force Command (JTFC), in partnership with the French Armed Forces, New Zealand Defence Force, and Australian Defence Force. This exercise took place from July 21 to 26, 2025, across the Viti Levu and Yasawa islands corridor, focusing on enhancing regional disaster response capabilities.

The primary aim of the training was to improve the operational planning of JTFC, foster collaboration between military and civilian organizations, and boost interoperability with international partners. In particular, the exercise underscored the Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ (RFMF) critical role in leading disaster relief efforts throughout the Pacific.

Key local and regional agencies, including the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO), Commissioner Western’s Office, civil society organizations, and NGOs, actively participated to ensure a comprehensive community approach to disaster preparedness.

Similar exercises, like the recently completed Exercise Croix du Sud, have shown Fiji’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its capabilities in disaster response and further enhancing regional cooperation. These efforts reflect the proactive approach of the RFMF to boost operational readiness amid increasing weather-related risks due to climate change.

The collaborative nature of such exercises not only improves individual country capabilities but also solidifies regional ties, fostering a spirit of unity among the nations involved. Fiji’s dedication to humanitarian operations and disaster response is a hopeful indication of the resilience and preparedness of Pacific nations in the face of future challenges.
