Fiji reaffirms its dedication to enhancing maritime safety and hydrographic collaboration through its participation in the 23rd Meeting of the South-West Pacific Hydrographic Commission. Representing Fiji was an official from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) along with Commander Jervis Robinson, director of Hydrographic Services for the Republic of Fiji Navy.

This meeting convened representatives from 13 Pacific Island nations as well as key international partners, focusing on advancing hydrography while enhancing navigation standards and promoting safer waters throughout the South-West Pacific. MSAF collaborated with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Maritime New Zealand to conduct Maritime Safety Information training for the Pacific Island nations. This training, financially supported by the International Hydrographic Organization’s Capacity Building Fund, aimed at empowering participants to issue timely navigational warnings and facilitate improved coordination within the region.

Fiji’s active involvement underscores its leadership role in fostering safe navigation as well as promoting regional collaboration and resilient maritime systems. The Fiji Navy emphasized the critical importance of hydrography in safeguarding lives at sea, ensuring that accurate nautical charts are available for safe navigation by maritime users.

Reliable hydrographic data is essential for multiple sectors, including maritime trade, fisheries, marine resource management, infrastructure development, tourism, and maritime security operations, ultimately contributing to the economic growth and safety of the region.

The successful assembly occurred in Noumea, New Caledonia, where Pacific Island nations united to prioritize their collective maritime interests and enhance safety measures across the waters. This collaborative effort not only reflects Fiji’s commitment to maritime safety but also its influence in shaping regional policies that benefit all Pacific Island communities.
