Provisional data released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics indicates that Fiji welcomed 70,993 visitors in January, representing a marginal increase of 0.3% compared to the same month in 2022. However, this figure reflects a significant decline of 16.5% from December 2022, during which the country recorded 84,995 arrivals.
Over the past five years, visitor numbers have shown a positive trend, with January arrivals increasing from 70,324 in 2022 to the current 70,993, highlighting a steady recovery in tourism. Of the total arrivals this past January, an overwhelming majority of 70,560 came via air travel, while 433 arrived by sea, predominantly seamen on fishing vessels.
Leisure travel continues to dominate, as it accounts for 80.1% of all arrivals, with friends and family visits composing 7.3%, business travel at 1.7%, and other reasons making up 10.9%.
The primary contributors to Fiji’s visitor numbers include Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, which together represented 51,387 travelers; notably, Australia alone accounted for 36,387 visitors.
The demographic profile of visitors shows that the majority are in the 25-64 age range, reflecting a strong presence of working-age individuals among those visiting the idyllic islands.
This gradual uplift in visitor numbers signals hopeful signs for Fiji’s tourism sector, suggesting resilience and potential recovery as it continues to attract international travelers.
