The Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) has put forth a proposal to increase its share of the departure tax to enhance its financial capabilities, as stated by acting chief executive officer Sereima Bolanavatu during a recent meeting with the Standing Committee on Social Affairs.

Currently, CAAF receives a $5 share from each departing passenger’s tax, with other entities also receiving portions of that amount. Bolanavatu expressed that the current arrangement may not be sufficient to meet the agency’s financial obligations. During the meeting, she mentioned that discussions had been held with the Ministry of Finance regarding this matter, emphasizing the need for a review of the existing tax structure.

In addition to seeking an increase in the departure tax, Bolanavatu highlighted the importance of reviewing and potentially raising CAAF’s fees and charges, which she indicated are currently quite low. “This will need to come about through the review of our regulations,” she remarked.

Chairman of the committee, Iliesa Vanawalu, supported the call for an urgent review of CAAF’s fees, asserting that the current rates do not align with contemporary business standards. He pointed out that several of CAAF’s regulations and policies are outdated, urging for a defined timeline to accelerate the necessary reforms.

Vanawalu suggested that establishing a clear plan of action could facilitate processes through the government that would benefit CAAF in the long run. The discussions reflect a proactive approach by CAAF to ensure that it remains financially viable and effective in its operations.

This pursuit for financial resilience highlights the ongoing efforts among regulatory bodies in Fiji to adapt to the evolving economic landscape, ultimately aiming to enhance the quality of operations and services provided to the aviation sector.
