The European Union and Pacific Island states have once again asserted their dedication to enhancing economic collaboration and fostering inclusive trade following the conclusion of the 11th EU–Pacific Interim Economic Partnership Agreement (iEPA) Trade Committee meeting held in Suva. This marks a significant step towards strengthening ties in the region.

The meeting, co-chaired by representatives from the European Union and Fiji, included member nations such as Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands, as well as Pacific nations aspiring to become part of the Agreement. Notably, observer nations were also present, including the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Niue, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu, indicating a rising interest among the regional countries in the partnership.

Key discussions at the meeting focused on essential areas such as enhancing agricultural value chains, promoting economic diversification, supporting geographical indications, encouraging organic agriculture, facilitating investment, sustainability, and fostering development cooperation. The participants emphasized the importance of improving market access and building economic resilience throughout the Pacific economies.

Furthermore, the Trade Committee acknowledged the progress made by Pacific states in their pursuit of accession to the iEPA, urging ongoing collaboration to prepare them for participation in the Agreement. The meeting also explored the Regional Kava Development Strategy, highlighting its crucial role in supporting livelihoods, preserving cultural heritage, and maximizing value-added export opportunities.

In addition to the regional focus, broader global trade matters were discussed, including preparations for the forthcoming World Trade Organization’s 14th Ministerial Conference and initiatives under the Samoa Agreement.

Concluding the session, the representatives adopted a joint communiqué that underscored their collective commitment to deepen cooperation under the iEPA, firmly aiming to advance sustainable development across the Pacific region. This renewed partnership presents a hopeful outlook for economic growth and cultural connections among these nations.
