Lion One Ltd has been directed by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to immediately halt all untreated discharges into the Sabeto River, following a recent incident that raised significant public concern. This directive comes after investigations into a discharge event that occurred on May 22, which resulted in elevated levels of zinc and lead being detected, along with reports of substantial fish deaths along a two-kilometer stretch of the river.
The Ministry issued a Prohibition Notice on June 6, 2025, following its water quality tests, and also issued a Non-Compliance Notice to Lion One for breaching seven conditions of the company’s Waste Disposal Permit. As a result, Lion One has ceased operations and is currently engaged in remedial actions that must satisfy the Ministry’s requirements.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Mosese Bulitavu, emphasized the government’s commitment to environmental protection, stating, “We have acted decisively and will continue to do so within our legal mandate.” He reiterated that the protection of Fiji’s environment is a national responsibility that necessitates swift action against breaches.
The recent actions taken reflect a broader effort to reinforce environmental stewardship, particularly following previous incidents involving Lion One that have highlighted the need for strict compliance and community engagement. In other cases, the Ministry has collaborated with local stakeholders to establish better protocols and improve transparency. Lion One’s chief operating officer has acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and the need to enhance communication and preventive measures moving forward.
This situation presents a significant opportunity for constructive dialogue between the mining company and affected communities, which may lead to strengthened regulations and practices, enhancing ecological health and community welfare for generations to come. Encouragingly, the proactive steps being taken by both the government and Lion One suggest a commitment to preventing similar incidents in the future, fostering responsible mining operations that prioritize both community safety and environmental integrity.
