The celebration of International Women’s Day in Lautoka spotlighted the critical issues surrounding gender equality and women’s mental health, with Mereisi Tavaiqia, operations manager at Empower Pacific, underscoring the need for increased attention to mental well-being among women and girls. Tavaiqia addressed how mental health often remains a neglected aspect of women’s empowerment, emphasizing the harmful effects of societal norms that discourage open discussions about mental health.
She noted that many women face significant stress and anxiety stemming from social expectations, work pressures, and personal life challenges, which can lead to stress-related disorders more frequently than in their male counterparts. Tavaiqia passionately advocated for creating supportive spaces where women can freely express their mental health challenges without the fear of judgment.
Her remarks resonate with those made by Sashi Kiran, Fiji’s Minister for Women, who has also championed women’s health as a vital component in achieving gender equality. Kiran emphasized the importance of involving men and boys in this dialogue to combat stereotypes and oppose violence, thus supporting a more inclusive society. Both leaders shared a vision of empowerment and the urgent need to remove obstacles that impede women’s progress in various aspects of life, including mental health.
The collaboration between Tavaiqia and Kiran reflects a shared commitment to enhancing women’s lives, envisioning a brighter future where women can live without violence and stigma. Their collective efforts point toward a promising pathway to establish comprehensive support systems that can positively impact women, their families, and broader society.
This ongoing focus on women’s empowerment and mental wellness holds the potential for significant transformation within communities in Fiji, aiming to create a more equitable and inclusive environment for everyone.
