Esther Margret, a 20-year-old from Saqani Village in Cakaudrove, is making waves as a recent graduate of Pacific Polytech, where she earned her National Certificate in Electrical Fitter Mechanic level three. With a strong belief that remaining at home after Year 13 isn’t an option, she is paving her way in the electrical field, inspired by her passion for electrical work since childhood.
Having previously attended All Saints Secondary School in Labasa and later enrolling in Oral Roberts University in Suva for Bible studies, Esther’s journey reflects a blend of faith and ambition. As a pastor’s daughter, she aimed to lead by example, but her aspirations extended far beyond her initial academic path. “From an early age I was keen on doing electrical works around our house and always dreamt of pursuing a job in the electrical field,” she stated.
Her practical experience was greatly enhanced through an attachment at Vatukoula Gold Mine, where she garnered hands-on insights into the industry. Esther expressed that working alongside men wasn’t a challenge for her, as she believes in the intrinsic goodness and happiness created by God’s design for humanity.
Esther’s message to her peers is clear: “Do not waste time and join a workplace to gain skills and knowledge.” She acknowledges the availability of educational resources today, urging young individuals to seize the opportunities that exist now, which were unavailable to previous generations.
Her story resonates with the experiences of other women in education, notably Sereana Korovulavula, a 45-year-old mother who is pursuing her studies in the Matua Programme. Sereana’s journey, alongside Esther’s, emphasizes the importance of resilience and determination in pursuing educational and career goals, regardless of age or circumstances.
As both women highlight, education continues to be a vital tool for transformation, and their journeys inspire others to believe in their potential and strive for success.
This optimistic outlook on education serves as a hope-filled reminder that with hard work and support, individuals can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals, ultimately benefitting themselves and their communities.
