Former journalist Charlie Charters has received permission to travel to Australia this month for his sports marketing endeavors. Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne issued this authorization while simultaneously cautioning Mr. Charters about the serious implications of failing to return to Fiji by March 26. He faces criminal charges filed by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), and the magistrate emphasized that should Mr. Charters not return, the proceedings against him would continue in his absence, potentially resulting in a trial without his participation. Each of his three sureties would be liable for $20,000 in such an event.
Mr. Charters is facing two charges of aiding and abetting the unauthorized disclosure of official information under Section 13G of the FICAC Act 2007, to which he has pleaded not guilty. During the court proceedings, Prosecutor Joshua Francis Prasad mentioned that Mr. Charters did not make any admissions during his caution interview. The case is set to be adjourned until March 30, allowing Mr. Charters a brief opportunity to conduct his business before returning to face the allegations in Fiji. This situation presents a critical moment for Mr. Charters, as his future in both his professional and legal endeavors hangs in the balance.
