Former England soccer captain David Beckham and actor Gary Oldman have been honored with knighthoods in King Charles III’s latest birthday honors list. In addition, sculptor Antony Gormley was awarded the title of Companion of Honour, recognizing notable contributions to the arts in the UK.
David Beckham, 50, started his illustrious football career at Manchester United in 1993, making nearly 400 appearances and winning multiple championships. Beyond his club success, Beckham has had stints with Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, and AC Milan, while captaining the English national team with 115 caps. His marriage to Victoria Beckham, a fashion designer and former Spice Girl, has further elevated his celebrity status beyond that of an athlete.
Gary Oldman, 67, is celebrated for his performances both on stage and in film, winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Winston Churchill in the 2017 movie “Darkest Hour.” His diverse filmography includes notable parts in the “Dark Knight Trilogy” and “Harry Potter” series, along with more recent work in the TV show “Slow Horses.”
The honors bestowed upon Beckham and Oldman illustrate the intersection of artistic achievement and public service, as they join other distinguished recipients, such as musical theater star Elaine Paige and novelist Pat Barker, who were recognized with damehoods. Roger Daltrey, the frontman of the rock band The Who, also received a knighthood for his charitable work, particularly with the Teenage Cancer Trust.
