Beyond the headline

A Heavy Rain Alert is in force for the entire Fiji group as an active trough of low pressure brings cloud, showers and rain to the western islands and is expected to spread across the country tomorrow. A northerly wind flow remains in place and will help sustain unsettled conditions through the next few days.

Through to midnight tomorrow, expect occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls over the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, the interior and western half of Viti Levu (including Ra–Rakiraki, Tavua–Ba–Lautoka, Nadi–Sigatoka to Navua and interior districts), Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, and the southern Lau group. Elsewhere there will be cloudy periods with some showers and afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Showers are forecast to become more frequent and develop into widespread rain from tomorrow, with isolated heavy falls possible.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas. Winds will be moderate to fresh from the north to northwest and gusty during heavy showers. Seas are expected to be moderate to rough. The outlook for Wednesday remains unsettled: occasional rain, heavy at times with a few thunderstorms over most places, continued risk of localised flash flooding, moderate to fresh northerly winds and moderate to rough seas.

Regional details show similar trends across the main centres and outer islands. Navua, Suva and Nausori will see cloudy periods with showers today and afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls; maxima around 30–31°C today and lows near 23°C, with occasional heavy rain developing tomorrow. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki, and the Coral Coast and Yasawa/Mamanuca groups are also forecast occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls, with daytime highs near 30–31°C. Northern and eastern districts including Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni will move from scattered showers and afternoon thunderstorms today to more persistent occasional rain with isolated heavy falls tomorrow (daytime highs about 31–33°C). Lau and Lomaiviti will see rain spreading from the southern Lau group to the rest of the island groups over the next day. Rotuma is presently fine apart from brief showers but is expected to see cloudy periods with some showers developing later tomorrow; moderate east to northeast winds and moderate seas are expected there.

A Heavy Rain Alert remains current for the entire Fiji group; localised flash flooding is possible in vulnerable areas and gusty winds can accompany heavy showers. Monitor the National Weather Forecasting Centre (Nadi) for the special heavy rain bulletin and further updates at https://www.met.gov.fj/alerts/.
