A Journey of Faith: Father Hoare’s Cultural Odyssey in Fiji

In a recent conversation with The Fiji Times, Father Frank Hoare, a Columban missionary priest, reflected on his transformative journey in Fiji after arriving from Ireland in 1973. At 26 years old, he stepped into a completely new world, notably different from his homeland’s “cold grey days.” The tropical heat and the tropical rains of Suva marked the beginning of a significant mission among the local people.

Upon his arrival, Father Hoare was assigned to the Columban Centre House in Tamavua while diving into language studies, commencing with Hindi—a language he was advised to learn to better connect with the Indo-Fijian communities. He described his initial experiences and humorously recounted attempts to navigate common interactions, sharing anecdotes that expressed both the challenges and joys of cultural immersion.

His dedication to understanding the local culture extended beyond the classroom. After a year in Hindi, he deepened his engagement by living in an Indian settlement in Labasa for two years, where he gained intricate knowledge about the culture and lifestyle, all crucial for his ministry. Further, he returned to Suva to learn the i-Taukei language and its customs that would enrich his understanding of the community’s rituals.

Father Hoare’s initial venture into Fijian life was filled with heartwarming moments—recalling the vivid memories of his first Easter Vigils and interactions with local community members. His narrative is a testament to the adaptability and commitment he demonstrated in seeking to forge deep relationships with both Christians and non-Christians, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and understanding among different cultures within Fiji.

His reflections resonate with the sentiments expressed in his recent publications, “A Missionary Diary” and “A World of Difference,” where he explores the cultural fabric of the iTaukei and Indo-Fijian communities. These books aim to foster deeper appreciation and connection among diverse cultures in Fiji.

Next week, readers can look forward to further insights into Father Hoare’s experiences and his contributions to the vibrant tapestry of life in Fiji—his story exemplifying hope, understanding, and the power of community bonds that transcend individual differences.
