Ninety Fijian workers are set to travel to Australia this week as part of the government’s labor mobility scheme, which aims to enhance overseas employment opportunities for local families. This group comprises 57 first-time participants and 33 returning workers, joining over 5,500 Fijians currently working across various sectors in Australia.
During a farewell ceremony, Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh expressed gratitude to the employers, trainers, and organizers who prepared the workers for this opportunity, as well as to their families for their unwavering support. He emphasized the significance of this moment, noting, “Out of tens of thousands still waiting for this opportunity, you are among the 90 chosen this week. This is not just a chance — it is a door that has opened for you and your families.”
Singh highlighted that overseas employment is crucial for many households, noting that workers typically earn an average of A$1,300 per month. This income enables them to contribute millions annually in remittances back home, supporting school fees, medical expenses, housing, and community projects.
However, the Minister cautioned that while the financial benefits are considerable, the emotional challenges of being away from loved ones must also be acknowledged. He stated, “Behind every worker seated here today, there is a family making a silent sacrifice.”
Singh urged the workers to be mindful of their responsibilities, advising them to honor their contracts and adhere to workplace regulations. He warned that any breaches, such as engaging in illegal or cash-in-hand jobs, could lead to immediate repatriation and forfeiture of future job opportunities.
To further support Fijian workers in Australia, Singh announced the appointment of four country liaison officers who will be available to assist them with any issues they may encounter during their employment. He concluded by reminding the participants that they are ambassadors for Fiji, encouraging them to work with pride, maintain discipline, and uphold the nation’s reputation abroad.
This initiative not only enriches the lives of individual workers and their families but also strengthens connections between Fiji and Australia, fostering a promising future for many in the community.
