Three young men have been remanded in custody following their appearance at the Labasa Magistrate’s Court, facing murder charges in connection with the death of a beggar named Bhan Pratap Singh in Draladamu, Wainikoro. The accused, identified as Onisivoro Qaqa, 20, Rokotui Babasiga, 22, and Samisoni Rokoua, 25, are each charged with one count of murder related to the tragic incident involving the 69-year-old Singh.

Singh, a familiar figure to those who traveled along Wainikoro Road, was known to frequent a bus shelter nearby where he would often beg for money. His body was discovered last Thursday, just two meters from his usual spot, prompting police action from the Wainikoro Community Post after receiving reports of the incident.

It is alleged that the accused attempted to steal coins from Singh—rumored to have been saving for a few bottles of beer. When he refused to comply, an altercation ensued, resulting in Singh’s unfortunate death. The case has now been transferred to the High Court in Labasa, as ordered by Magistrate Amelia Korodrau, and is set to resume on February 11 next year.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of marginalized individuals in society and the need for greater community awareness and protection. As the legal proceedings unfold, it will be important for the community to support initiatives that ensure the safety of all individuals, especially those who might be living on the fringes.

Summary: Three young men have been charged with the murder of a beggar, Bhan Pratap Singh, in Wainikoro, following attempts to steal money from him. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of vulnerable individuals in society. Legal proceedings are set to continue in February.
