Veteran prop Peni Ravai is gearing up for a competitive showdown for a starting position in the Swire Shipping Drua pack as the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season opener approaches. Known for his physical play, the Flying Fijians front-rower is facing intense competition from a talented new wave of Fijian props but is embracing the opportunity to challenge himself.

After his rehabilitation period, Ravai expressed how training alongside the younger players keeps him motivated. “Training with these young boys keeps me on my toes because they are fit, but I’m ready, always ready,” he asserted. Understanding the importance of peak fitness, Ravai aims to secure his place on the squad, with a personal goal of playing every match this season.

The Drua’s roster features an impressive group of young forwards, including well-regarded talents like Haereiti Hetet, Emosi Tuqiri, and John Muller. Ravai commented on the healthy competition among the young prop players, highlighting their readiness. “Competition is definitely there and for me, I just need to be fit and play every game,” he said.

Beyond the drive to compete, Ravai’s return home to Fiji holds significant emotional value for him. “I love to be back home. I’ve been away from my family for a very long time, and to be back here, playing for my home, for the home crowd with the family around me, I’m just happy to be back,” Ravai shared.

Drua chief executive Mark Evans commendably noted Ravai’s role as an important experience anchor for the team, stating, “A wonderful role model along with Mesake Doge for the younger props. So, his role is important on the field as well as off the field.”

The Drua is set to kick off their 2025 campaign against the Brumbies next Saturday at 3:35 PM at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

This season brings renewed excitement and good competition within the Drua squad, as fans eagerly anticipate seeing Ravai’s contributions both in skill and leadership. With a positive outlook, Ravai remains focused on achieving personal and team goals while representing his home country.
