A slow-moving trough of low pressure, combined with a moist east to southeast wind flow, will keep northern and eastern parts of Fiji unsettled through tonight. Expect frequent cloud, showers and isolated thunderstorms with periods of heavy rain across several islands, while much of the west will see partly cloudy conditions with afternoon or evening showers.
To midnight, occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls are likely over interior, southern and eastern Viti Levu (from Serua/Namosi through Naua–Suva–Nausori up to Tailevu North), the Yasawa group, eastern and interior Vanua Levu (southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces including Taveuni and nearby smaller islands), and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere, conditions will be partly cloudy with the chance of afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, some of which may produce heavy rainfall. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Moderate east to southeast winds will prevail, fresh at times, and seas are expected to be moderate to rough. Mariners and those using small craft should take care in the coastal waters, and residents in flood-prone locations should be prepared for sudden rises in water levels where heavy showers occur.
The outlook for Saturday is for cloudy periods with some showers across Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Ra–Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Cakaudrove and southern Bua provinces, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere should be largely fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms; heavy falls remain possible in storms, so the risk of localised flash flooding will continue.
Local area notes: Navua, Suva and Nausori will see occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls (min 23°C, max 30°C; Saturday min 23°C, max 32°C). Natadradave and Korovou have a similar forecast. Yasawa will have occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls while the Mamanuca group is expected to be partly cloudy with isolated afternoon or evening showers (min 23°C, max 30°C; Saturday mainly fine). Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Sigatoka and the Coral Coast can expect partly cloudy conditions with isolated showers and likely afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls (daytime highs around 30–32°C). Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni will see cloudy periods with showers, with showers becoming heavier and a few thunderstorms possible in the afternoon or evening (daytime highs to about 30–32°C). Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu will have occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls. Rotuma remains mostly fine apart from brief showers with moderate easterly winds and moderate seas (min 24°C, max 32°C).
