FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure over the Fiji group, together with a moist east to southeast wind flow, will bring scattered to frequent showers and isolated thunderstorms across the northern and eastern islands tonight and into tomorrow. The heaviest falls are expected in pockets and could be intense at times, with a risk of localized flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas.

Occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely for Sigatoka–Korolevu, Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra and Rakiraki, the Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Taveuni, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces and nearby smaller islands will see cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms, with showers easing to occasional later today. Elsewhere, conditions will be partly cloudy with isolated showers mainly in the afternoon or evening, but afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls remain possible.

Wind conditions are generally moderate from the east to southeast, becoming moderate to fresh southeasterly from tomorrow. Seas are moderate at present but are expected to increase to moderate to rough, which may affect small craft and coastal activities.

City and island summaries include: Navua/Suva/Nausori — occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls (tonight and tomorrow), tomorrow’s temperatures around 23–30°C and Saturday easing to cloudy periods with some showers (23–32°C). Nadi/Lautoka/Ba and Tavua/Rakiraki — partly cloudy with isolated afternoon or evening showers and possible thunderstorms with heavy falls; Nadi/Lautoka/Ba forecast 23–32°C. Yasawa/Mamanuca — cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms over Yasawa, easing later; Mamanuca mainly partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers (23–30°C). Taveuni, Savusavu and Nabouwalu — cloudy with showers and isolated thunderstorms, easing to occasional showers (23–30°C). Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu — occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls (23–30°C). Rotuma will remain mainly fine apart from brief showers under a moderate easterly flow, with temperatures around 24–32°C.

Given the potential for localized heavy falls, residents in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas should be prepared for sudden rises in water levels and reduced visibility in heavy rain. Mariners and those using small vessels should monitor conditions as seas are expected to become rougher from tomorrow. Local updates from the National Weather Forecasting Centre should be followed for any changes to the situation.
