As the new rugby season approaches, the Naitasiri Rugby Union (NRU) is advocating for mandatory drug testing for all rugby players across Fiji. NRU president Peceli Rinakama presented this initiative to John Sanday, the chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) board of directors.

Rinakama emphasized the importance of implementing these tests starting this season, particularly before the Skipper Cup. He noted that conducting drug tests could serve as a deterrent against drug use among youth, promoting a cleaner and healthier rugby environment in Fiji. “We want all rugby players in Fiji to be tested for drugs,” he stated, indicating the union’s commitment to this cause.

Plans are already in motion to begin organizing tests as early as next week, utilizing the expertise of a specialized professional. Rinakama highlighted the aspiration to extend drug testing across various levels of rugby, including primary and secondary schools, as well as women’s and girls’ sports.

This initiative represents a proactive step towards combatting the drug crisis within the sport and positioning rugby in Fiji as a clean and fair competition. By advocating for these mandatory drug tests, the NRU aims to not only uphold the integrity of the sport but also to ensure a healthier future for young athletes.

Ultimately, this move is a hopeful sign of change in Fijian rugby, sending a clear message about the importance of maintaining a drug-free culture within the sport.
