The Fiji Government, led by Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua, is placing a strong emphasis on enhancing its maritime security and domain. Minister Tikoduadua highlighted that over 90 percent of threats to Fiji emanate from the sea. He advocated for a focus on strengthening the capabilities of the navy, stating, “Whether it’s above the sea, on the sea, below the sea, that means that should also be the focus of where we build capacity.”

The minister acknowledged the challenge posed by the limited number of vessels available to patrol Fiji’s extensive exclusive economic zone. He expressed optimism regarding assistance from the Australian Government, specifically mentioning the potential provision of two large boats suitable for Fiji’s coastal waters under the Police Reset Strategy.

Minister Tikoduadua emphasized the navy’s main responsibility: safeguarding the nation’s maritime corridors. He noted the importance of increasing resources to build capacity in this sector. Reflecting on past issues faced by the navy, he stated that every institution has its challenges, but reaffirmed the commitment to improving maritime safety and security.

He hopes to position the navy in strategic locations, such as Lau and Vanua Levu, which would enhance their ability to combat drug trafficking and other illegal activities.

This emphasis on maritime security not only demonstrates Fiji’s proactive stance in safeguarding its waters but also indicates a commitment to international cooperation, particularly with Australian agencies. As Fiji navigates these challenges, the strengthening of its navy could lead to more secure seas for its citizens.
