Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu has attributed the worsening drug crisis in Fiji to the previous FijiFirst government’s lack of leadership and focus. He emphasized that during the era of the FijiFirst administration, there was no dedicated minister to address drug-related issues, which significantly contributed to the increase in crime rates.

Reflecting on the past, Bulitavu remarked, “The drug crisis we have now was due to the past government’s neglect,” referencing a 2019 motion proposed by Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua aimed at forming a parliamentary committee to tackle drug issues. This motion was rejected, leading to inaction while the crisis exacerbated.

In contrast to the prior administration’s shortcomings, Bulitavu commended the current People’s Coalition government for their proactive measures, including the establishment of a dedicated Ministry for Policing, which he sees as a vital step towards effectively addressing the nation’s drug crisis.

This acknowledgment of past failures and recognition of current efforts signifies a hopeful shift in governance, emphasizing a more focused and dedicated approach to combating pressing societal issues such as drug-related crime. The renewed commitment from the current government could pave the way for more effective strategies aimed at mitigating the burgeoning drug crisis in Fiji.
