FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure currently lies over the Fiji group, bringing cloudy skies with showers, isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls to northern and eastern areas. A second trough is expected to approach from the west later on Sunday, while a moist east to southeast wind flow prevails across the country.

Through to midnight tomorrow, occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls are expected across interior, southern and eastern Viti Levu (Serua/Namosi through Navua–Suva–Nausori, Naitasiri, Tailevu North and Ra–Rakiraki), the Yasawa group, southern parts of Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. These showers should gradually ease to some showers from tomorrow. Elsewhere, conditions will be partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, with heavy falls possible in those bursts.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, so communities in susceptible locations should remain alert during heavy downpours. Winds are expected to be moderate east to southeast, fresh at times, becoming easterly later tomorrow. Sea conditions will be moderate to rough.

Looking ahead to Sunday, cloudy periods with some showers are likely over the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Cakaudrove and eastern Macuata provinces, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Ra–Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, as well as Taveuni. Elsewhere will generally be fine apart from afternoon or evening showers, with thunderstorms and heavy falls possible in the afternoon or evening. Winds will be moderate to fresh from the east to northeasterly and seas moderate to rough.

Local area notes: Navua / Suva / Nausori can expect occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls, easing to some showers tomorrow (min 23°C, max 32°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba, and Sigatoka and the Coral Coast are mostly partly cloudy with isolated afternoon or evening showers and possible thunderstorms with heavy falls (daytime highs around 32–33°C). Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, Lau and Lomaiviti, and Kadavu are also likely to see occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls, easing to some showers from tomorrow (night lows near 22–24°C, daytime highs around 31–33°C). Rotuma remains relatively settled, fine apart from brief showers with moderate easterly winds and moderate seas (min 24°C, max 32°C).
