A recent joint surveillance operation has revealed significant food safety violations in the Nausori-Nasinu corridor and Lami, raising concerns over public health and safety in local restaurants. The Consumer Council of Fiji, in collaboration with health inspectors from various town councils, conducted inspections of 93 establishments, uncovering alarming levels of non-compliance, with every inspected restaurant receiving violation notices for multiple offences.

Seema Shandil, Chief Executive of the Council, described the findings as both “appalling and hazardous”, highlighting severe cleanliness issues within many kitchens. Reports indicated the presence of greasy cooking equipment, dirty floors, and unsanitary food preparation and storage areas. In addition to these concerns, several establishments were found to have infestations of pests such as flies, cockroaches, and even rats.

Food safety risks were notably high, with uncovered food items, cross-contamination, and improper food handling practices observed. Many establishments also lacked fundamental facilities such as adequate hot water, ventilation, and clean personal protective gear. Shandil emphasized that these findings reflect a troubling disregard for hygiene standards that should be upheld in food service establishments.

The Council is particularly alarmed by the current penalties for violations, which Shandil believes are ineffective deterrents. She advocates for stronger measures, including increased spot fines and a public disclosure policy to hold non-compliant businesses accountable. According to her, the current fines are being treated by some operators as just another cost of business, which undermines public health efforts.

Shandil stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness in kitchens, asserting that businesses failing to do so should not have the right to operate. The Council will collaborate with health inspectors to ensure that non-compliant establishments are either improved or permanently closed.

Consumers are encouraged to report any unsanitary conditions they encounter by contacting the National Consumer Helpline or via email. Strengthened enforcement of food safety regulations could enhance public confidence in local dining options and promote a healthier community overall.
