Women in leadership positions are facing a stark reality, as they are subjected to online attacks at rates that are significantly higher than their male counterparts. Global statistics reveal that women can experience up to ten times more harassment and criticism online.
Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change, brought this pressing issue to light, attributing the root cause to systemic patriarchy. She emphasized that while men are often evaluated based on their performance, women are frequently judged on their character and appearance. Instead of a critical focus on policies or achievements, female leaders find themselves scrutinized for their looks, clothing choices, hairstyle, vocal tone, and even facial expressions.
This disparity in judgment reflects an unfair imbalance that Tabuya argues must change, advocating for a shift towards assessing individuals based solely on their capabilities. The minister underscored the need for social media companies to step up their efforts in moderating harmful content and combating hate speech, pointing out their critical role in addressing the rise of online abuse.
Furthermore, Tabuya noted that media organizations share the responsibility of not perpetuating online hostility for the sake of sensationalism and audience engagement. She cautioned against the culture of clickbait, which often exacerbates the problem, advocating for moderation of comments to avoid promoting hate speech.
Tabuya emphasized that the responsibility for change does not solely rest on digital platforms. She called for a collective effort across society, involving schools, churches, community leaders, and families, to foster respect, healthy relationships, and gender equality. To achieve lasting change, she argued, education is crucial, along with the support of male allies in the fight for equality, and a fundamental shift in societal attitudes to ensure women have an equal voice at decision-making tables.
