Three young men have been remanded in custody following their appearance in the Labasa Magistrate’s Court regarding the murder of 69-year-old Bhan Pratap Singh, a familiar face in the Draladamu area of Wainikoro. The accused, Onisivoro Qaqa, 20, Rokotui Babasiga, 22, and Samisoni Rokoua, 25, face charges related to Singh’s tragic death.
Singh, who had lived for many years in a bus shelter along Wainikoro Road, was recognized by many commuters in the area. Last Thursday, police from the Wainikoro Community Post received a report regarding an elderly man found deceased just two meters from his shelter. Known for his habit of begging, he often carried a box filled with coins.
According to the allegations, the three individuals attempted to steal coins from Singh to purchase alcohol. When Singh refused to comply, they reportedly assaulted him, resulting in his death. Magistrate Amelia Korodrau has transferred the case to the High Court in Labasa, with the next hearing set for February 11.
This case serves as a grave reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by marginalized individuals in society. It is hopeful that justice will be served, highlighting the need for community support and awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
