Josaia Winimaivunidawa Raisuqe, the late Olympic silver medallist and talented winger for Castres, will be laid to rest tomorrow in his home village of Lutu, Wainibuka, Naitasiri. His body returned to Fiji yesterday, accompanied by club representatives, his parents, Tevita and Mereani Raisuqe, and his partner, Ilona Valette.

Valette, who had been in a relationship with Raisuqe for four years, expressed her sorrow at Nadi International Airport, stating, “We were just talking about building a house together.” It is a tragic note that her first trip to Fiji comes under such heart-wrenching circumstances.

The former Fiji 7s representative tragically lost his life in a road accident on May 8, when his vehicle was hit by a train while he was on his way to training. Despite the tragedy, his contributions to rugby are remembered with admiration. Raisuqe made seven appearances for Castres this season and notably helped secure a silver medal for Fiji at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

His arrival in Fiji was marked by a traditional ceremony attended by members of the Fiji Rugby Union and fellow athletes, reflecting the profound impact he made within the rugby community. The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, and executives from various sporting bodies were present to honor Raisuqe, symbolizing the collective grief felt across both local and international rugby circles.

Raisuqe’s funeral service is scheduled for 10 am tomorrow, followed by his burial. His death has elicited widespread mourning, particularly in light of the recent losses within the Fijian rugby community, as another talented player, Sekove Tagicakiverata, was also recently lost.

The camaraderie and support expressed within the rugby fraternity during these trying times serve as a meaningful testament to the bonds formed through the sport, ensuring that Raisuqe’s contributions and spirit will be celebrated and remembered for years to come. As the community comes together to honor his legacy, they also draw strength and hope from the unity that rugby fosters.
