Sisters Make History with Emergency Medicine Graduation in Fiji

Two sisters, Adi Nunia Talatoka and Makelesi Tikomaina­vualiku Kautoga, celebrated a significant achievement on Wednesday as they received their Post­graduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine from the Fiji National University. The graduation ceremony, held at the Fiji Vodafone Arena, was a proud moment not only for the sisters but also for their entire family.

The sisters expressed deep gratitude for their parents’ sacrifices and the guidance they received from God throughout their journey. Adi Nunia, the elder sister, studied for her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in China, while Makelesi completed her MBBS at Fiji National University in 2015.

Reflecting on the challenges they faced, Makelesi acknowledged the difficulty of balancing work and studies but remained thankful for the wisdom that helped them persevere. They have become the first in their extended family to achieve such esteemed qualifications, and Makelesi expressed hope that their accomplishment could inspire others in their community to explore new fields.

Currently, both sisters are practicing at Aspen Medical in Lautoka, driven by a strong commitment to the welfare of their patients. Makelesi emphasized the importance of being knowledgeable and compassionate in providing quality care.

For Adi Nunia, her son serves as her greatest source of inspiration. She mentioned how her parents’ sacrifices deeply affected her, fueling her desire to be a role model for her child and set high standards for him.

Both sisters recognized the critical role of mentoring from senior healthcare professionals and urged the importance of perseverance. They asserted that while the course was indeed challenging, achieving goals is possible with dedication and faith.
