Scandal Uncovered: Corruption Allegations Shake Fiji’s Governance

Justice David Ashton-Lewis, who is leading the Commission of Inquiry (COI) regarding the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), has revealed alarming findings. In a recent interview on Radio 4CRB, he stated that nine individuals are suspected of either lying under oath or obstructing justice throughout the inquiry. Justice Ashton-Lewis indicated that these actions, including perjury, have raised serious concerns about the validity of Malimali’s rushed appointment to her position.

He expressed that the investigation uncovered a troubling rapid progression through the internal processes for Malimali’s appointment, suggesting that her role could have been designed to serve the interests of individuals with dubious motives. He stated, “The rest of the evidence showed she was so important because she would do evil people’s designs.”

Currently, the Prime Minister is reviewing Ashton-Lewis’s findings, with indications that he intends to implement the recommendations regarding the implicated individuals. This inquiry is part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and accountability in Fiji’s governance, addressing past criticisms regarding the integrity of public appointments.

Additionally, Justice Ashton-Lewis’s statements have also prompted backlash from Malimali, who has lodged a defamation complaint about his comments. Her legal representative contends that the remarks risk undermining the fairness of the inquiry’s proceedings.

As the COI continues its investigation, which includes evaluating testimonies from key public figures, there remains hope that it will lead to significant reforms within Fiji’s political landscape. The outcomes could foster renewed public trust in governmental institutions and enhance the standards of ethical governance. This inquiry serves not only as a pivotal examination of Malimali’s appointment but also as a crucial step toward promoting a culture of accountability that the public all too eagerly awaits.
