The newly upgraded Suva Bus Station is now safer and more efficient for the estimated 20,000 daily users. The revitalization project, valued at $1 million, was a collaborative effort involving the Suva City Council, the Fiji Roads Authority, China Railway No. 5, and various development partners.

The comprehensive upgrade includes several significant improvements such as better signage, clearer pedestrian pathways, surface resealing, repainting, drainage cleaning, and the installation of surveillance cameras. These enhancements have been met with positive feedback from commuters, who express that the travel experience has markedly improved compared to previous years.

Commuter Taione Vatukarisito reflected on the enhancements, saying, “It’s great what the Suva City Council has done, and we are grateful for it. Only one thing — we need some shelter from strong wind and rain.” This sentiment highlights the ongoing need for comfort in transit facilities.

Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau commented on the project, noting that it has effectively addressed long-standing public concerns. He emphasized the importance of this development, stating that security cameras have been added to bolster safety and improve monitoring.

Ro Filipe pledged continued collaboration among government entities to ensure that future developments meet the needs of citizens. “Ministry, FRA, Public Works, all entities should work together, and we should not be expending a lot of energy on issues that should be resolved between government agencies. We will work out the best arrangement because, at the end of the day, what matters most is delivering for the people,” he said.

The completion of Phase One marks a significant milestone, while Phase Two will introduce Terminal Four at the current MPI site, a modern double-storey facility designed to enhance passenger services and serve as a meeting point for cruise ship tourists. This upcoming development is expected to solidify Suva’s status as a vital transport and tourism hub, paving the way for future growth and improved services in the region.
