Salote Vatutuku, a 16-year-old women’s sevens rugby player from the Solomon Islands, had an inspiring experience competing in Fiji as part of the Ezers Club during the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament. Vatutuku expressed her passion for rugby, revealing that her involvement in the sport aims to motivate others back home, where rugby is not as popular compared to soccer.

Residing in the Solomon Islands as a permanent resident alongside her family, Vatutuku is keen on shining a light on the development of rugby in her homeland. “Solomon Islands rugby is developing slowly; they have the talent but it’s really not popular right now,” she noted, emphasizing her efforts to balance both academics and athletics.

Having participated in the Oceania Sevens rugby tournament last month, she faced challenges, including an injury that kept her out of the Pacific Games. However, her participation in the tournament in Fiji brought a sense of pride as she represented her home country. “It’s a great opportunity to play for them,” she shared, while acknowledging the support from her family, especially those back in Noro, Western Province.

Highlighting her aspirations, Vatutuku aims to enhance her skills and continues to actively promote women’s rugby in the Solomon Islands. Her story contributes to the growing narrative of female athletes stepping onto larger platforms and showcases an emerging wave of talent within the Pacific region.

In light of her achievements and dedication, Vatutuku’s journey not only serves as an inspiration for young players in the Solomon Islands but also symbolizes the potential for growth and recognition in women’s rugby across the Pacific region. Amidst the ongoing development, she stands as a beacon of hope for future athletes pursuing their dreams in sports.
