Waqasaqa Votuwale expressed immense pride and happiness as his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, was recognized as the dux of Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. The 18-year-old achieved this honor during the school’s recent prizegiving ceremony, scoring an impressive 405 out of 500 in her Year 13 annual examination.

Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer from Bouma Village, Taveuni, shared that the decision to move to Valebasoga, Labasa, was driven by a desire to provide better educational opportunities for their children. He and his wife made significant sacrifices, leaving their village life behind to prioritize their children’s education.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for our family,” Mr. Votuwale acknowledged. “As the sole breadwinner, I had to put my children’s needs first. My wife and I didn’t have the chance to finish our secondary education due to financial struggles, but I wanted to ensure that my children have the opportunities we didn’t.”

Mr. Votuwale noted that Maraia’s success was anticipated, as she has consistently demonstrated dedication throughout her academic journey, having previously been the dux of her school in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination. Maraia, who aspires to become an accountant, expressed heartfelt gratitude for her parents’ unwavering support and sacrifices.

“As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, which is why I aimed for the dux award,” she stated. “I am thankful for my parents’ sacrifices, and I will surely make them proud.”

This heartwarming story serves as an inspiring reminder of the sacrifices parents make for their children’s education and the importance of resilience and dedication in achieving success. Maraia’s achievements not only honor her parents’ hard work but also highlight the potential for future generations to thrive through education.

In a world where educational opportunities can often be limited, stories like these reflect hope and the transformative power of perseverance and parental support.
