The Nausori Town Council has enhanced its solid waste management initiatives with the recent handover of equipment as part of the Recycle Organics Program. This new support comprises 20 wheelie bins designated for market waste segregation, an organic waste chipper, composting tools, home composting bins, as well as compost aerators and kitchen caddies.

Pablo Lopez Legarreta, the Advisor for the Recycle Organics Program, highlighted that organic waste constitutes a significant portion of municipal waste, which, when sent to landfills, contributes to the generation of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. “Organic waste, which encompasses food scraps, fruit and vegetable trimmings, and other biodegradable materials, is a crucial component of waste streams,” Lopez Legarreta noted.

Paula Navunisaravi, the Special Administrator, emphasized that this support represents a substantial advancement in the management of organic waste within markets and the surrounding communities. The initiative aims to promote effective waste segregation and composting, fostering a transition towards a sustainable circular economy.

Representatives from nearby councils, including the Lami Town Council, Suva City Council, and Sigatoka Town Council, also attended the handover, underscoring a collaborative effort to improve environmental practices across the region. This collective focus on responsible waste management highlights the importance of community engagement in building a greener future.
