Lomaiviti Rugby Club celebrated a proud moment as they emerged victorious against Nabua with a score of 13-7, securing both the Esala Teleni Shield and the Rauluni Trophy in round nine of the Suva Rugby Union club competition. This hard-fought win showcased the team’s commitment and dedication, as highlighted by head coach Kalisito Tunaulu.
Tunaulu attributed the victory to the team’s discipline and preparation over the past three weeks, stating, “The boys played exceptionally well today, and this is the fruit of the hard work they’ve been doing for the last three weeks.” He expressed that the win was not just a reward for this game but was a result of continuous effort, emphasizing that “Today is the day of harvest for us.”
The Esala Teleni Shield honors a former Fiji and Suva rugby representative, while the Rauluni Trophy is contested between Lomaiviti and Nabua to commemorate the Rauluni family, originally from Lomaiviti but who played for Nabua. Tunaulu pointed out that while winning the shields is a significant achievement, the team has set its sights on more substantial goals this year. He remarked, “The goals we have set are to believe in the Lomaiviti brand, believe in the Lomaiviti culture.”
One critical lesson from the match pointed out by Tunaulu was the importance of field discipline, stating, “We shouldn’t be playing a lot in our half. Even though we were leading, the game could have gone the other way.” With just two more rounds remaining before the competition progresses to the quarterfinals, Lomaiviti Black is determined to maintain this winning momentum as they aim for the playoffs.
In related news, other matches in the FMF Suva Escort Shield saw FA & Co Eastern Saints narrowly defeating Lakeba 33-32, while Covenant secured a 29-27 win over Naqarani. Meanwhile, Nasinu and Suva Stallions were awarded wins by default against Tovata and Navakavu, respectively.
The sporting atmosphere remains vibrant as teams prepare for the upcoming challenges, fueling excitement among rugby enthusiasts in Fiji. This victory for Lomaiviti not only enhances their standing but also inspires confidence as they march toward future competitions with greater aspirations.
