A strong push for improvement is underway at Ratu Sukuna Memorial School as they gear up for the 2025 Fiji Finals after finishing fourth in the girls’ division last year. The school’s strengths are predominantly in field events, with star athlete Loata Lewageena taking the lead. Lewageena, who is a gold medalist at the Fiji Finals and a national representative, is also serving as head girl, making her a key contender in the javelin and discus throw this season.

Yesterday, the school held its inter-house meet at the HFC Bank Stadium, where athletes competed for spots in the Suva Zone 1. Kuini Vitukawalu, the school’s vice-principal, expressed optimism about the school’s performance, noting that they plan to send approximately 200 athletes to the upcoming zone competition that they are hosting this year. “We want our athletes to perform,” Vitukawalu stated while emphasizing their reliance on field events, which have historically garnered medals for the school.

In addition to their established field athletes, the school is experimenting with new track competitors, hopeful that they too will shine in track and field events. Vitukawalu articulated her ambitions for both the girls’ and boys’ teams, aiming to see an elevation in their achievements this year. “For our girls, it’s about whatever they can achieve. Last year we finished fourth, and we want to climb higher,” she said, underscoring the importance of progress.

The boys’ team also saw success last year, securing two medals for the first time in several years—a milestone that has raised hopes for further accomplishments this season. Vitukawalu concluded by highlighting that beyond competition, the inter-house events are crucial for the holistic development of the students, fostering not just athletic skills, but also character and teamwork.

As the students continue to train and prepare, there is a palpable sense of anticipation building within the school community, eager to see their athletes excel at the upcoming competitions.
