LELEAN Memorial School’s under-17 boys rugby team is gearing up for the national quarter-finals in the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL) competition, with a strong emphasis on discipline and strategic play. This follows their intense 16-14 victory over Naitasiri Secondary School in the semi-finals at St. Marcellin grounds in Vatuwaqa.
Head coach Naka Joe Sabo expressed confidence in the team’s ability to regroup after a challenging setback the previous week. He reflected on the victory as a “blessing in disguise,” saying it reinforced their commitment to their game plan even under tough conditions. “We mellowed down, and we did what we were supposed to do; that’s what we showed today,” he said.
To secure the win, Lelean strategically countered Naitasiri’s formidable forward pack by leveraging their speed on the flanks and moving the ball wide. The successful approach allowed them to capitalize on their strengths and effectively shut down Naitasiri’s advances.
Lelean’s triumph puts them at the top of their division, carrying crucial lessons into the national competition set to take place in the Western Division. Coach Sabo also acknowledged the unwavering support from fans who braved inclement weather, highlighting its importance in motivating the players on the field.
The excitement extends beyond Lelean’s match, as the semi-finals of the competition showcased several other thrilling games. In the U15 division, Marist Storms overcame Nasinu Panthers, while Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School delivered a commanding performance against Vashist Muni College. Additionally, Nasinu Secondary claimed a decisive victory over MBHS in the U17 category.
As the tournament progresses, the community’s enthusiasm for youth rugby continues to grow, underlining the vital role of sports in fostering teamwork and resilience amongst young players in Fiji. With dedication and the right mindset, teams like Lelean reflect the promising future of rugby in the country, inspiring hope for continued success and development in the sport.
