Labasa has claimed the top spot in the Extra Premier League standings after a decisive 4-1 victory over Lautoka in their Round 3 clash at Churchill Park. The Babasiga Lions showcased their strength, with Jimson Abana, a key player from the Solomon Islands, making significant contributions by scoring twice during the match.
Lautoka, which made efforts to bolster their squad by recruiting former national goalkeeper Isikeli Sevanaia, initially took the lead in the fourth minute thanks to a goal from Saula Waqa, following some impressive buildup play by Sitiveni Cavuilagi. However, Labasa quickly leveled the score just seven minutes later when Abana earned and converted a penalty after being fouled in the box by Lautoka’s Ilimotama Jese.
Abana’s dynamic style was on full display as he took advantage of a defensive lapse just minutes after his first goal, finding the net again and pushing Labasa ahead 2-1 before halftime. The game shifted further against the Blues when Waqa received a direct red card, putting Lautoka at a disadvantage.
In the second half, Labasa’s fitness paid off, as they exploited a weary Lautoka defense, scoring two additional goals through Rusiate Doidoi and Jone Lalagavesi. This strong performance not only gives Labasa a total of 7 points from three matches but also positions them well for the rest of the season, while Lautoka stands at the bottom with two losses.
This victory follows Labasa’s previous successes, including an impressive 6-0 win over Tavua, where Abana also shone brightly, scoring a hat trick and emphasizing his vital role within the team. Coach Alvin Chand has been pleased with the growth and determination shown by his players, which indicates a positive outlook for Labasa as they continue their league campaign.
The results reflect Labasa’s rising momentum and the potential for further success, encouraging fans and supporters to remain optimistic about the rest of the season. The combination of player talent and coaching strategy positions the Babasiga Lions as serious contenders in the league.
