Rewa’s Under-19 football team has celebrated a significant achievement by securing the National Youth League Championship title after a resounding 4-1 victory over Labasa in the National Playoffs, which took place at the Fiji FA Academy. This triumph follows a challenging match the previous day, where they faced a narrow defeat of 1-0 to Ba U19.
The standout performance for Rewa came from Mosese Namumu, who netted two goals. Delon Shankar converted a penalty while Ratu Peniasi added another goal, contributing to the team’s impressive display. The coaching staff for these playoffs was led by Roderick Singh, the coach of the senior team, alongside assistant coach Priyant Mannu and Vice President Peter Cecil.
Cecil expressed deep gratitude for the players’ and coaches’ efforts throughout the league campaign, highlighting the difficulties they encountered in balancing football training with academic commitments. “There were some hurdles they had to overcome, such as managing trainings during exams and helping consider studies also for the young boys. However, with determination, the young delta tiger came through,” he stated.
In a reflection on the youth development program, Cecil pointed out that several players, including the goal scorers in this final match, have progressed through the ranks to gain experience with the senior team, enhancing the talent pool for the U-19 squad.
This win is not only a celebration for Rewa but also signifies the success of their youth development strategy, which is crucial for nurturing future talent within Fijian football. As the team continues to build on this success, it creates an optimistic outlook for the future of Rewa’s footballing efforts across all age levels.
