The trial of a 40-year-old police officer accused of raping his 16-year-old cousin will see key witnesses, including the victim’s mother and aunt, testify in court. The man, facing nine charges of sexual offenses, allegedly committed the acts on several occasions between 2019 and 2024.
During a recent session, Justice Dane Tuiqereqere granted the State’s request for a closed trial to protect the victim’s identity, allowing for a screen and a female translator to assist during the proceedings. The defense, represented by attorney Joji Cakau, stated that they intend to call only the accused as a witness. The trial is expected to take place over three days, with bail for the accused extended and the next court date set for May 13.
This case reflects ongoing concerns over sexual violence within familial relationships and the judicial system’s approach to handling such sensitive matters. With recent cases involving similar charges, there is an increasing recognition of the need for robust legal responses to protect vulnerable victims and ensure justice. The hope remains that the court’s proceedings will acknowledge the gravity of these allegations and support victims in reclaiming their voices in the fight against sexual violence.
