Farmers are expressing growing concerns regarding the lack of post-harvest planning and limited market access for selling their produce at equitable prices. This ongoing issue significantly impacts their potential income from crops, leading to increased stress and uncertainty within the agricultural community.
Petero Uluinaceva, a kava farmer, highlights the competitive nature of the kava industry, where both quality and market value have steadily risen. Despite the challenges, farmers in Kadavu remain resilient and optimistic, adjusting their practices to navigate the complexities of the kava market.
“I have always promised myself that once I retire, I want to live in Suva and sell my Yaqona. The prices have increased over the years, which is a huge benefit for the business,” Uluinaceva shared. His decision to relocate to Suva was driven by the desire to establish his business and support his family, illustrating the determination of farmers to thrive despite obstacles.
To combat market access issues and improve their livelihoods, many kava growers are diversifying their product offerings and selling directly to consumers. This adaptability showcases their commitment to overcoming challenges and taking full advantage of the increasing demand for kava.
The perseverance of farmers like Uluinaceva exemplifies hope, as they continue to seek innovative solutions to enhance their economic viability while contributing to the agricultural sector.
