Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh has highlighted the government’s commitment to prioritizing unemployed Fijians for job opportunities under the Pacific Labour Mobility Scheme. During an appearance on FBC TV’s program “Your Voice,” Singh noted that although the application process is currently paused, the National Employment Center (NEC) is actively reviewing thousands of existing applications.
The NEC’s focus is clearly on ensuring that Fijians who are without jobs are given first preference. Singh mentioned that the NEC is cross-referencing applications to verify the current status of each applicant, ensuring fair treatment in the selection process. Recently, 200 Fijians completed training and are set to travel to Australia for employment shortly.
Singh confirmed that once the current backlog, which has reached a significant number of pending applications, is resolved, the NEC will resume accepting new applications. This approach not only aims to support unemployed Fijians but also addresses the administrative challenges that have long affected the labor mobility frameworks available.
In light of the ongoing challenges, there is hope that the government’s commitment to efficiently processing applications will lead to a more streamlined registration process in the future. These ongoing efforts reflect a proactive strategy intended to benefit the workforce in Fiji and ultimately support families through improved access to overseas job opportunities.
