The Commission of Inquiry (COI) investigating the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has addressed concerns surrounding payment delays for its members. Senior Barrister Janet Mason clarified that these delays resulted from the tardy submission of invoices, rather than any external issues. She noted that the team had been fully engaged with their work, leading to invoices being submitted two weeks late.

As the inquiry enters its second week, it is scrutinizing the legal legitimacy of Malimali’s September 2024 appointment and any possible external pressures associated with ongoing FICAC cases. Tanya Waqanika, Malimali’s legal counsel, highlighted the complexity of the inquiry, suggesting that it may require an extension due to its thorough nature.

While Waqanika stopped short of characterizing the inquiry as a deliberate attack on Malimali’s character, she did convey that Malimali remains supportive and optimistic throughout the proceedings. The inquiry is presided over by Supreme Court Justice David Aston-Lewis, who is dedicated to ensuring a careful examination through detailed witness testimonies.

The inquiry not only seeks to clarify the specifics of Malimali’s appointment but also symbolizes a broader commitment to improving transparency and accountability within Fiji’s governance. As the commission continues its vital work, there is optimism that the outcomes will facilitate essential reforms and help restore public confidence in governmental institutions.

This situation underscores the importance of maintaining integrity in public appointments and represents a significant movement towards a more transparent and accountable future in Fiji’s governance. The hope is that the findings will contribute to a stronger trust between the government and the citizens it serves.
