From Kadavu to the National Stage: Inoke Bolakoro’s Inspiring Rugby Journey

Fiji National Rugby League Under-18 player Inoke Bolakoro has overcome peer pressure and personal challenges to earn a coveted spot on the national U18 squad, marking a significant milestone in his young rugby career. The talented lad from Kadavu, who resides in Nabua, Suva, acknowledges the intensity of peer influence but attributes his success to discipline and a strong desire to create a better future for himself and his family.

Bolakoro’s aspiration to secure an overseas rugby contract is a common goal among many young athletes, and he emphasizes that while the path may be difficult, it is rewarding. He conveys a powerful message about resisting temptations and harmful influences, stating, “There’s a lot of temptation, a lot of bad influence, breaking the laws, that’s why I have decided not to follow that path.”

Expressing disbelief at his selection, Bolakoro shared that he feels an immense sense of responsibility to support his parents back in the village. As the only player from his school selected for the team, he sees this opportunity as a dream come true—one he never expected to achieve.

A total of 30 players have been chosen for the squad, which is set to compete against Tonga U18 on the 24th of this month at Churchill Park in Lautoka. Bolakoro’s journey resonates with the stories of other young athletes in Fiji, such as Setareki Turagacoke, who recently shared his excitement about being selected for the Fiji Water Flying Fijians. Turagacoke’s experience reflects the commitment to developing young rugby talent, underlining the potential for these young sportsmen to inspire others through their dedication and dreams.

The inspiring narratives of these young players highlight the vibrancy of Fiji’s rugby scene and serve as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes, illustrating that perseverance can pave the way to success in sports and beyond.
