A trough of low pressure over the Fiji group is keeping a moist east to southeast wind flow in place, bringing cloudy conditions with frequent showers and isolated thunderstorms across the northern and eastern islands. Another trough is expected to approach from the west late tomorrow, which will maintain unsettled conditions in parts of the group into the weekend.
Through midnight tonight, occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls are expected over interior, southern and eastern parts of Viti Levu (Serua/Namosi through Navua–Suva–Nausori, Naitasiri, Tailevu North and Ra–Rakiraki), the Yasawa group, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Showers will gradually ease to some showers from today. Elsewhere across the group conditions will be partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, with heavy falls possible in the convective cells.
Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, so communities in susceptible locations should remain alert to rapidly rising water and take appropriate precautions. Electrical storms and brief intense downpours can produce sudden runoff in steep or built-up terrain.
Winds are moderate east to southeast, fresh at times, and are expected to become easterly later tomorrow. Seas are generally moderate to rough. The outlook for Sunday indicates cloudy periods with some showers over the Yasawa and Mamanuca group, Cakaudrove and eastern Macuata province, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Ra–Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby islands, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Taveuni and nearby smaller islands. Elsewhere will be mainly fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms. Winds will be moderate to fresh from the east to northeast, with seas moderate to rough.
Local notes: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls, easing to some showers later (min 23°C, max 32°C), with cloudy periods and some showers on Sunday. Natadradave/Korovou, Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu are all forecast occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls, easing to some showers from today (typical minima 22–23°C and maxima 31–33°C). Yasawa and the Mamanuca group have occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls today, becoming partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers later (min 22°C, max 33°C) and mainly fine on Sunday. Sigatoka/Coral Coast, Nadi/Lautoka/Ba and Tavua/Rakiraki are expected partly cloudy conditions with isolated afternoon or evening showers and likely thunderstorms with heavy falls; Sunday will be mainly fine apart from late showers. Rotuma remains under an easterly wind flow and is generally fine apart from brief showers, with moderate easterly winds and seas (min 24°C, max 32°C), and brief showers again possible on Sunday.
