FNU Takes a Stand: Uniting Against Violence Towards Women and Girls

Fiji National University (FNU) has reiterated its strong commitment to combating violence against women and girls through its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2026.

The university has made it clear that any instances of violence or discrimination against women will be completely unacceptable within its community and beyond. FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba emphasized the institution’s dedication to nurturing an inclusive and equitable atmosphere.

“At FNU, we are dedicated to fostering a culture where every individual is valued, respected, and safe. Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights, and it has no place in our society,” Professor Nabobo-Baba declared.

She also urged all Fijians to acknowledge the critical roles women play across various sectors, stating, “Women are essential to Fiji’s development and success. They are no longer confined to traditional gender roles but are pivotal contributors in education, business, health, and governance. We must empower and support them in reaching their fullest potential.”

As the nation participates in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, under the theme “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” Professor Nabobo-Baba conveyed a message of solidarity. She urged every Fijian to contemplate their part in cultivating a culture of respect and safety, encouraging them to advocate against injustice and provide support for survivors. “Together, we can break the cycle of violence and create a future where women and girls can live free from fear and with dignity,” she emphasized.

FNU’s GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan serves as a framework for advancing gender equality and ensuring a secure and inclusive environment for everyone.

This commitment from FNU is indeed a beacon of hope, signifying a collective effort towards a more equitable society. It’s an encouraging reminder of the power of solidarity and the importance of community involvement in eradicating violence and supporting vulnerable groups.
