The Fiji Performing Right Association (FIPRA) is set to host its Music Awards this year, rekindling a vital platform for local music creators after a two-year hiatus. This highly anticipated event will introduce a new category dedicated to celebrating traditional storytelling and language, solidifying its commitment to cultural preservation in music.

FIPRA’s Board of Directors Chairman, Isireli Gumatua, announced that the awards will take place in May, featuring an expanded lineup of 15 categories, including the newly introduced “Best Sigidrigi” category, which aims to honor songs that encapsulate Fiji’s rich cultural heritage and everyday experiences through music.

Gumatua emphasized that the awards reflect a renewed dedication to recognizing composers and artists whose contributions continue to influence Fiji’s musical landscape both at home and internationally. The awards ceremony is scheduled for May 9th, with entries opening today and closing on the 27th of this month.

To qualify, songs must have been officially released within the 2025 calendar year and registered with FIPRA. The categories for this year’s awards include Best English Song, Best Itaukei Song, Best Hindi Song, Best Gospel Song, Best Hip Hop Song, Best Sigidrigi Song, Best Artist of the Year, Best New Artist, Most Popular Music Video, Most Popular Song, International Achievement, Best Composition, and Outstanding Service to Fijian Music.

This year’s Music Awards not only aim to celebrate the creativity of local artists but also to ensure that the richness of Fijian culture and music continues to be acknowledged and cherished. This promising initiative underscores the importance of supporting local talent and fostering a vibrant cultural identity through music.
