In a recent report from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) in Fiji, it was revealed that out of 417 cases filed in the High Courts during the previous year, 47 involved individuals under the age of 18. This data pertains specifically to serious crime incidents, excluding sexual violence offences, which are documented and published separately. Notably, the statistics also encompass cases involving police officers.

The total number of serious crime offences charged reached 513 as of December 31, 2024. Among the accused, 47 were minors, and there were also nine police officers involved. Throughout the year, the ODPP documented a varying number of cases each month, with the highest count occurring in February with 90 cases, while December reported the lowest with just 16 cases.

In total, there were 310 victims associated with these serious offences, with 51 incidents involving related parties. Additionally, the ODPP noted that 33 cases were withdrawn following formal discontinuances during 2024.

This report highlights a concerning trend of youth involvement in serious criminal activities, reflecting broader societal issues that may require intervention and support. Addressing the root causes of youth crime could foster a safer environment for future generations.

Overall, while the numbers may paint a grim picture, they also underscore the importance of continued efforts in crime prevention and rehabilitation, promoting hope for positive change in the community.
