The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association has voiced its support for the Land Transport Authority’s initiative aimed at addressing traffic congestion in the Suva-Nausori corridor. Chief Executive Fantasha Lockington emphasized the significant impact that traffic inefficiencies have on the private sector, leading to diminished productivity.
Congestion in this corridor, along with other areas such as Lautoka-Nadi and Sigatoka-Nadi, presents ongoing challenges for commuters during peak times, which affects both local businesses and visitors. Lockington noted that delays not only reduce operational efficiency but also escalate transportation costs, jeopardizing service quality in both the public and private sectors.
The association is backing trial solutions proposed by the Authority, which include the introduction of slip lanes, optimization of traffic lights, and restrictions on right turns. Lockington expressed hope that similar measures will be applied in Nadi, a region also facing significant congestion, particularly during flooding events.
As discussions progress toward sustainable solutions—such as staggering work and school hours, improving public transportation systems, and regulating vehicle imports—Lockington called on policymakers to address the root causes of traffic issues. She warned that these problems could worsen road accidents and fatalities, subsequently hindering economic productivity, especially in the tourism and commercial sectors.
This collaborative effort aligns with the government’s ongoing strategies to mitigate traffic congestion in crucial areas, suggesting a positive outlook for the development of a more organized and efficient transport system. Such advancements are expected to enhance the commuting experience for all residents in Fiji.
The partnership between the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association and the Land Transport Authority reflects a shared commitment to infrastructure and transport reforms, which not only tackle immediate challenges but also lay the groundwork for long-term improvements in connectivity and productivity across the region. The proactive stance taken by these organizations is a significant step towards fostering a more sustainable future for Fiji’s transportation landscape.
