Fiji’s tourism sector continues to show signs of recovery as the Fiji Bureau of Statistics reports an encouraging increase in visitor arrivals for May 2025. A total of 86,587 tourists visited the island nation during the month, marking a 7.7 percent rise compared to April 2025, which saw 80,363 arrivals.
The majority of these visitors, 84,250, arrived by air, while 2,337 traveled by sea. Among the sea arrivals, most were seamen on fishing vessels at 1,835, with the remaining 502 arriving by yacht.
The purpose of travel for many of these tourists was primarily leisure, with 79.5 percent visiting for vacation reasons. In addition, 7.0 percent came to see friends or family, whereas 2.6 percent arrived for business matters, with 10.9 percent traveling for various other reasons.
Data on the origins of these visitors highlights Australia as the largest source market, contributing 38,632 arrivals. New Zealand followed with 19,613, while 11,418 came from the United States, 2,882 from Continental Europe, 2,377 from China, and smaller contributions of 1,889 from Canada and 1,175 from the United Kingdom.
Drawing comparisons with previous months, the incremental growth indicated in May aligns with the overall positive trend in Fiji’s tourism, echoing a similar surge experienced in April, which was characterized by a significant recovery from the previous months. The favorable visitor numbers reflect ongoing promotional efforts by local authorities to enhance Fiji’s appeal as a premier vacation destination, suggesting a bright future for the tourism sector.
This sustained growth in tourism not only supports Fiji’s economy but also underscores the resilience of the travel industry as it adapts to fluctuating global conditions, reinvigorating local businesses and cultural exchanges. With continued interest from international travelers, Fiji remains poised to solidify its status as a sought-after travel destination.
