Pacific Games gold medalist Hansel McCaig has made headlines by setting a new national record in the men’s 100 meters medley. Competing at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, McCaig clocked an impressive time of 57.31 seconds last week.
McCaig was one of three representatives from Fiji at the championships, alongside Marseleima Moss and U.S.-based swimmer David Young. Notably, Young also distinguished himself by establishing a national record in the men’s 50-meter butterfly during the same event.
In addition to the impressive performances in the pool, Fiji Swimming President Lucy Erasito and Eugene Panuve shared their strategic plan with World Aquatics for the next two quadrennial periods. This plan was developed over nine months in collaboration with the International Federation as part of a mentorship program aimed at aligning Fiji’s swimming federation with global standards.
A workshop was conducted with various stakeholders in Fiji Swimming to refine the organization’s visions, missions, and values. Fiji Swimming successfully met its obligations to World Aquatics, gaining insight into effective planning and collaboration, while also recognizing common challenges faced by other national federations, regardless of size.
In a statement, Fiji Swimming expressed gratitude to both the previous and current boards for their roles in guiding the organization’s vision. They emphasized their commitment to prioritizing the needs of their athletes above all else.
This positive momentum highlights the dedication of Fijian athletes and the ongoing efforts of Fiji Swimming to enhance the nation’s swimming programs. With such strong performances on the world stage, the future looks bright for swimming in Fiji.
